Cocktail reception or banquet: which to choose

A cocktail reception and a banquet solve different problems. A reception means guests move freely, food is served lightly, and the emphasis is on mingling — it works well for presentations, business receptions, and networking-focused events.

A banquet means seating and a full course sequence — from starters through the main course to dessert. This is the format for events where a long, considered dinner atmosphere matters: weddings, anniversaries, corporate celebrations.

When in doubt, go by duration and purpose: short business events tend toward a reception, and celebrations with a longer program toward a banquet. The two can also be combined — a reception on arrival, a banquet later.
